Questions always come up as to when a person needs to wear their brace.
People’s questions are usually first in the nature of how to the put the back support on, but shortly after that, the “when to wear the brace” questions come about. – Totally understandable.
We will help to solve this problem for you.
1.) There are different kinds of back braces. Not all of them are created equal.
This might not come as any surprise to you, but you may not have thought about the fact that this will change the level of use for many people. For example, if you wear a scoliosis back brace, then some of these called a Charleston Bending Brace are mostly meant for sleeping. Other scoliosis braces are to be worn 20 hours per day, so yes you would wear those to bed.
However, most of the time, people do not wear back braces to bed. Every situation is different and we must always remember that. But, there is less stress on your spine when you lay down and your physician may tell you that you do not have to wear it at this time. – Some people prefer to wear their back brace to bed because it will help to eliminate their back pain, but still people usually doff these braces at night, in bed. – In the end, your physician needs to be the one to tell you how long to wear it and for what activity levels. That’s the bottom line.
2.) Your diagnosis is not the same as everyone else
If you have a fracture, you might be told by your physician to only wear the brace during sitting and standing. Or during ambulation, for example. Other times, as we mentioned earlier, the scoliosis braces are worn to bed. – The problem with some fractures is that if you rotate them, when you roll in bed, things might get worse. So, as we have said before it is best to talk with your doctor about wearing parameters with a spinal orthosis (brace).
In our experience, people usually get to take their braces off when they go to bed. However, this is only medical information and not medical advice. Be very careful not to take this as your one and only guide.
We hope this information has helped you understand that not every brace is the same and the wearing parameters are all different.
