Usually people come to us because their doctor has sent them over for a back support / spinal orthosis.
However, sometimes, people will wonder on their own if they should get something to support their back or not.
The question is natural, if you do not know anything about orthotics (braces) then how would you know if they work or not… Right?
1.) The Goal Of A Back Brace
The short answer to the question is, “yes, back braces can really help a lot”.
However, let’s talk about why they help to give you more than what just sounds like an opinion.
A.) Motion Control
When you have injured your back, you will want to avoid certain movements. Many people refer to this as “motion control”. The truth is, when you have hurt your back, why keep hitting the same spots over and over again? – This is especially true when it comes to fractures. However, even if you have a muscle strain or any other pain related diagnosis then it is still important not to keep aggravating your back.
There are 3 planes of motion for the spine. The sagittal, coronal, and transverse planes of motion.
Saggital : This plan is referred to as being vertical in nature, dividing the body into right and left halves.
Coronal : This plan is also vertical, but the difference here is that it divides the body into “front and back” sections.
Transverse : This plane divides the body into “superior and inferior parts”.
When you are feeling fine, back support is not necessary, obviously. But, you may begin to understand why you might need one based off of the previously mentioned information.
B.) Pain Reduction
The bottom line is that a person can also feel a lot of pain reduction, when wearing a properly applied back support. Unfortunately, we do not recommend the kinds you get from a store typically, because those are not as supportive or well designed as what you might get from a professional.
The pain reduction you notice can be attributed to motion control and an increase in intercativary pressure. Increasing intercavitary pressure for a lower back injury would mean we make the support snug in this area. This feeling can help reduce discomfort many fold. However, don’t just believe our blog, believe our patients that have come in to do testimonials. We did not pay anyone to come in and talk about their back support, so it would be a worth while thing for you to check out. http://rinella-op.com/our-testimonials/.
