A. Course Description: This course was made to show medical professionals what ankle foot orthoses are, how they can help their patients and how they are made. This course will give medical professionals a greater understanding of AFOs so they can help communicate their patient's needs to an orthoptist.
B. Measurable Course Objectives: After taking this course, the participant will know general statistics related to falls and ambulation, the different types of ankle foot orthoses, general AFO instructions and how to apply an AFO with a patient's shoe. The participant will also see how an AFO is made, understand how the height of an AFO can affect a patient, understand the different choices in AFOs, how to address tight shoes and plantar flexion contractures, how to reduce the noise, how to prevent excessive in-toeing, and how AFOs can help with balance issues.
C. Time Schedule and Program Content: This course will be taken online at their own pace. The course is approximately 2.25 hours long. The course content consist of videos and PowerPoints explaining different types of AFOs and how they can be of use to different patients.
D. Format and Method of Instruction: The course will be 2 hours of slideshows and videos to present the content. There will be an additional quiz that will take approximately .25 hours to complete in order to assess the participant's understanding of the course material.
E. Instructor's CV: Dan Rinella, CO< will be the instructor. Dan is a graduate of Northwestern University's orthotic program. He also spent several years at Northwestern Memorial as their lead orthotist. Dan received his Master's Degree in Orthotics from the University of Hartford. He is the president of Rinella Orthotics and Prosthetics and has written over 175 articles on relevant topics.
