Getting an AFO-The First Visit
If you are diagnosed with drop foot you may be in need of some medical attention. This medical attention may come in the form of a brace for your ankle and your foot. If you are looking for a brace to help you with your condition it is best to speak with a medical professional in your area to ensure that you find the proper brace and get it custom fitted to your leg. By working with a doctor in your area you can also get your brace covered under many insurance plans which is not an option when you order a generic brace online. Doctors typically do not make the AFO braces we are speaking of, but instead they refer to a specialist called an orthotist. – You can find an orthotist in your area to help you get the right brace by conducting a simple search using your zip code and/or city with the keywords “leg brace” or “AFO” which stands for ankle foot orthosis.

Muscle Testing By The Brace Specialist
After a brace specialist is found in your area they will likely conduct manual muscle testing. This is done in order to determine your particular strength levels. The orthotist (or brace specialist) needs to see how strong your muscles are both at the knee and at the ankle. Some people have difficulty lifting their foot while others need stability on one side over the other. Even still some people have knees that buckle every so often as they walk. With manual muscle testing the orthotist can find the perfect brace to help you. There is no need to be ashamed if you have muscle weakness; that is the reason the test is done: to see if you have any weakness and where. By being honest during this test you can find the best brace and get yourself back on the walking path.
The Casting Process
Once your physical strengths and weaknesses have been assessed your brace specialist will create an impression of your leg and your foot using plaster of Paris or fiberflass. This is called the casting process. After the impression of your foot, ankle and leg has been taken a custom brace can be created just for you. This particular walking brace is called an AFO or Ankle Foot Orthosis.
There is no need to worry as this process is completely painless. Once it is done you are sure to find that it was the most interesting part of your day. After your first visit you will need to book a second visit to get your brace.
