Why Use A Custom AFO For Foot Drop?

If you suffer from drop foot it is important that you help your situation improve by using an AFO. Working with a professional to find a customized brace can make all the difference. An AFO brace to help you walk better again and one that is hard for people to see when you are using it. A brace for the foot is often used to help people with gait problems walk regularly in a good way. These braces are often called AFOs. The term orthosis is something that refers to an external method of support like a brace. You can get them in a style that is prefabricated or is also custom made. In many cases, it is usually recommended that a custom brace is made for you so that the fit will become better and more accurate.

An AFO is going to basically be an ankle brace and also works on supporting the foot. They will help you walk better in a number of important ways. First of all, it holds the toes up while you are walking. This is done through sometimes through the use of springs located in the brace itself.  Other times, the brace is held at a neutral ankle so your toes can not continue to drag, which can cause falls.  Besides that, there are some braces which help provide something called a dorsi-assist, which will make the toes come up through a process called dorsiflexion. This is something that is helpful if your problem is foot drop. There are also issues in which the heel-to-toe gait is a problem and these types of braces are something that will help provide relief for people who are having this type of issue.

There are also AFO types of braces that can provide support for the sides of your ankles if the standard amount of support are not enough. Besides this, you can also use some AFOs to indirectly support the knee. This will help everything be more stable. The brace does not come all the way up to your knee, but if the knee is generally weak then an AFO can be a positive influence on your stability. If the knee snaps back or goes and buckles when you are trying to walk, an AFO can be what you need to help stabilize the motion. It can help you end up with a more neutral alignment. This is something that is primarily done through the control of ankle motion and the use of height of posterior aspects of AFOs which will help stop the knee from snapping backward.

How Custom AFOs are Made

In general, custom AFOs are made from a cast of your body.  This means that the brace specialist will have the shape of your heel, ankle and foot, as well as your calf to make sure the brace fits as good as possible.  From here the orthotist will also take measurements and basically custom fabricate your AFO from the exact mold of your body.  Off the shelf AFOs can be useful, but when you can choose, people typically go with a custom AFO due to long term comfort and support reasons.
